Nostril piercing goes as far back as the beginning of human history. People belonging to different cultures pierced their noses for various reasons. Some to show their warrior status, some as a coming of age ritual and some to reduce the pain during childbirth while some others had a piercing to represent their religion. In America, however, nostril piercing, as a fad, developed quite late. It was perhaps the hippies who were returning home, who took with them, the concept of nostril piercing. Since they were followers of the music genre called ‘punk rock’, nose piercing was associated with ‘punk’, being rebellious and anti-establishment. Today, however, a nostril piercing can hardly be considered rebellious or ‘punk’. It is a form of piercing that has acquired acceptance from the traditional section of society. More and more workplaces too, are allowing nostril piercing out of all facial piercings.

There are three basic types of nose piercing: nostril piercing, nasal septum piercing and bridge piercing. In the eastern part of the world, it is the left nostril that gets pierced because the Ayurveda states that this helps to reduce pain during menstruation and eases the process of childbirth. But with increasing experiment with piercing in the West, the nose piercing has become trendy rather than being traditional.

Nostril piercing is done by passing a needle through a tissue and replacing it with a nose ring or a stud. Stud is a piece of jewelry with a screw behind it to hold it in place. Septum piercing is done by puncturing a tissue inside the nose. Rings, barbells, tusks and spikes are commonly used jewelry for this sort of piercing. The rarest form of nose piercing is the bridge piercing, where only barbells can be used as jewelry.

The location of the piercing must be kept in mind while choosing the jewelry for the piercing. The jewelry must fit well and emphasize the features of the face. The material of this kind of jewelry ranges from 14 or 18 carat gold, titanium, surgical steel to niobium. Jewelry made of sterling silver should only be worn once the piercing has healed.

Nose jewelry usually comes in the shape of the classic barbell or a nose screw. According to the choice of the customer, the nose screw can be plain and simple or studded with jewels. Like nose jewelry, eyebrow jewelry also includes the small captive barbell. Wearing a sparkling, dangling barbell can enhance your eyebrows and make give them an exciting look. Jewelry for the eyebrow is normally designed in a straight or curved manner, dangling from the top and adding more charm to the eyebrow.
